Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions.

Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

In order to continue our progress to achieving net zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 25.09 tCO2e by 2031. This is a reduction of 50% against the 2018/19 baseline year.

Completed carbon reduction initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2018/19 baseline. The company’s reported emissions have decreased by 20.49 tCO2e, representing a 40.84% reduction against the 2018/19 baseline. The measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

• Maintaining a verified Carbon Footprint calculation in line with ISO 14064:2018, ensuring accurate monitoring and transparency.
• Implementation of an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, providing a structured framework for managing environmental impacts, identifying environmental risks and opportunities, setting environmental objectives and supporting continual improvement in environmental performance.
• Continuing the widespread use of remote working and virtual meetings, reducing travel-related emissions and promoting sustainable business practices.
• Implementation of carbon footprint reduction training and employee awareness activities, supporting employees in understanding the organisation’s carbon footprint and identifying practical actions to reduce emissions, energy consumption, resource use and unnecessary travel.
• Ongoing staff engagement and training on energy-saving behaviours, sustainable commuting options and efficient use of resources.
• Operating through a shared office system, ensuring office energy consumption is minimised by aligning occupancy with actual need.
• Continuing the transition toward electric vehicles (EVs) and lower-emission vehicles when renewing leases or making new purchases, where vehicles are required.
• Supporting verified tree-planting initiatives as part of Spherica Business Solutions Ltd’s wider environmental and sustainability commitments. During the current reporting year, the associated tree-planting activity is estimated to have resulted in 5.6573 tCO2e of CO2 sequestration, based on the applied tree growth and carbon sequestration methodology. This sequestration figure is reported separately from the company’s organisational carbon footprint and is not deducted from the reported Scope 3 emissions.
• Maintaining and updating our Environmental Policy to align with best practice, ISO 14001 requirements and organisational growth.
• Ensuring that refurbished IT equipment and other business assets are reused or donated to charities where appropriate, extending product life cycles and preventing unnecessary waste.

Future carbon reduction initiatives

• In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:
• Encourage home-working employees to consider renewable energy tariffs and energy-efficient practices, where practical.
• Continue to expand employee education and awareness around carbon reduction and sustainable practices, including responsible energy and resource use when working remotely.
• Pursue further reductions in electricity, gas and heating demand across operations, where Spherica has influence over energy use.
• Continue to reduce waste generation, while increasing reuse, refurbishment, recycling and responsible disposal of equipment and other materials.
• Continue to reduce water consumption and promote responsible water use across business operations.
• Decrease reliance on parking permits and private vehicle travel, while promoting walking, cycling, public transport and shared mobility where practical.
• Further embed sustainable procurement principles into supply chain and purchasing decisions, taking environmental considerations into account when selecting suppliers, products and services.
• Strengthen collaboration with suppliers, contractors and business partners who share Spherica’s environmental and sustainability objectives.
• Continue to use the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System to identify environmental improvement opportunities, establish appropriate environmental objectives and monitor progress towards carbon reduction and net zero.
• Review the company’s carbon footprint annually and use the results to identify and prioritise further practical carbon reduction opportunities.
• Continue supporting verified tree-planting and other recognised environmental projects as part of Spherica’s wider environmental and sustainability commitments, while continuing to prioritise direct reductions in the company’s carbon footprint.

Declaration and sign-off

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 006 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements (where required), and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
